How effective is chiropractic treatment?

A recent systematic review of the randomised controlled clinical trials carried out using manipulation, mobilisation, massage and exercise for musculoskeletal conditions concluded that there is moderate to high evidence of the positive effect of chiropractic on a number of conditions and complaints.

Chiropractic is proven to have a positive effect on:

  • Back pain
  • Leg pain/sciatica
  • Neck pain
  • Migraine headaches
  • Cervicogenic pain (pain associated with neck conditions or injuries)
  • Cervicogenic dizziness
  • Shoulder problems
  • 'Tennis elbow'
  • Hip problems
  • Knee problems
  • Plantar fasciitis

Further evidence:

  • Favourable evidence was also found for a number of other conditions, but was not fully conclusive due to various factors, such as studies not being large enough, amongst others.
  • The above information was taken from 'Bronfort G et al. Effectiveness of manual therapies: the UK evidence report Chiropractic and Osteopathy 2010,18:3'.
  • The National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines May 2009 give further information on the NHS recommendations.
